English

In English, high levels of achievement, creativity and positivity are expected of all adults, and all children in our school.

At Lingham Primary School we strive to create a community of exceptional speakers, readers and writers by making the spoken word, reading and writing, irresistible for our pupils. We teach and encourage our pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

Through reading in particular, pupils at Lingham Primary School will develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. We believe that inspiring and quality literature, English enrichment activities and first-class teaching, play a unique and key role in these developments and will allow our children to achieve at the highest levels.

The National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding; they should develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary and an understanding of grammar
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn and be competent in speaking and listening
